The Mind (2018)

2-4 players20mdifficulty 1.1@ A1

★★★★★

The Mind is more than just a game. It's an experiment, a journey, a team experience in which you can't exchange information, yet will become one to defeat all the levels of the game. In more detail, the deck contains cards numbered 1-100, and during the game you try to complete 12, 10, or 8 levels of play with 2, 3, or 4 players. In a level, each player receives a hand of cards equal to the number of the level: one card in level 1, two cards in level 2, etc. Collectively you must play these cards into the center of the table on a single discard pile in ascending order but you cannot communicate with one another in any way as to which cards you hold. You simply stare into one another's eyes, and when you feel the time is right, you play your lowest card. If no one holds a card lower than what you played, great, the game continues! If someone did, all players discard face up all cards lower than what you played, and you lose one life. You start the game with a number of lives equal to the number of players. Lose all your lives, and you lose the game. You start with one shuriken as well, and if everyone wants to use a shuriken, each player discards their lowest card face up, giving everyone information and getting you closer to completing the level. As you complete levels, you might receive a reward of a shuriken or an extra life. Complete all the levels, and you win! For an extra challenge, play The Mind in extreme mode with all played cards going onto the stack face down. You don't look at the cards played until the end of a level, losing lives at that time for cards played out of order.

Love letter (2019)

2-6 players20mdifficulty 1.1@ A1

★★★★★

The noble Princess is looking for an ideal partner and confidant to help with her royal duties when she one day assumes the throne. You must prove your worth and gain her trust by enlisting allies, friends, and family of the Princess to carry a letter of intent to her. Can you earn the Princess' trust and become her confidant? Playing cards one at a time, players in Love Letter use the abilities of these key people in the Princess' life to outwit their opponents and successfully deliver their letter and gain her favor. Players must utilize each character's special skill to avoid being caught and successfully deliver their letter to the Princess. Once a set number of favor tokens are acquired, that player wins and becomes the Princess' confidant. This 2019 edition of Love Letter features new artwork by Citadels artist Andrew Bosley, screen-printed tokens, and two new characters (five cards in total) that allow for games with up to six players. When played, the Chancellor (value 6) allows you to draw two new cards, add those to your hand, then place two cards of your choice on the bottom of the deck. The Spy (value 0) wins you a favor token if you were the only player to play or discard a spy during the round. Secret Hitler (2016)

5-10 players45mdifficulty 1.7@ A3

★★★★★

Secret Hitler is a dramatic game of political intrigue and betrayal set in 1930s Germany. Each player is randomly and secretly assigned to be a liberal or a fascist, and one player is Secret Hitler. The fascists coordinate to sow distrust and install their cold-blooded leader; the liberals must find and stop the Secret Hitler before it's too late. The liberal team always has a majority. At the beginning of the game, players close their eyes, and the fascists reveal themselves to one another. Secret Hitler keeps his eyes closed, but puts his thumb up so the fascists can see who he is. The fascists learn who Hitler is, but Hitler doesn't know who his fellow fascists are, and the liberals don't know who anyone is. Each round, players elect a President and a Chancellor who will work together to enact a law from a random deck. If the government passes a fascist law, players must try to figure out if they were betrayed or simply unlucky. Secret Hitler also features government powers that come into play as fascism advances. The fascists will use those powers to create chaos unless liberals can pull the nation back from the brink of war. The objective of the liberal team is to pass five liberal policies or assassinate Secret Hitler. The objective of the fascist team is to pass six fascist policies or elect Secret Hitler chancellor after three fascist policies have passed.

Deep Sea Adventure (2014)

2-6 players30mdifficulty 1.2@ B1

★★★★★

A group of poor explorers hoping to get rich quickly heads out to recover treasures from some undersea ruins. They're all rivals, but their budgets force them all to share a single rented submarine. In the rented submarine, they all have to share a single tank of air, as well. If they don't get back to the sub before they run out of air, they'll drop all their treasure. Now it's time to see who can bring home the greatest riches. Game Objective The game takes place over 3 rounds, and the player to gain the most points over the 3 rounds is the winner. In order to gain points, you must bring the most ruins chips back to the submarine. You can only return to the submarine once per round, and you cannot progress more after returning. You cannot return to the submarine without bringing any ruins chips. Turn Progression On their turns, players conduct steps 1-4 listed below. Players take turns, going clockwise around the board, and the round ends when all players have returned to the submarine, or if the air runs out at the beginning of someone's turn. 1) Declare if you will turn back or not. 2) Reduce air. 3) Roll the dice and advance your game piece. 4) Search. (When you have stopped moving, select one of A-C below) A) Do nothing. B) Pick up ruins chip. C) Place a ruins chip.

In Takenoko, the players will cultivate land plots, irrigate them, and grow one of the three species of bamboo (Green, Yellow, and Pink) with the help of the Imperial gardener to maintain this bamboo garden. They will have to bear with the immoderate hunger of this sacred animal for the juicy and tender bamboo. Dobble (2009)

2-8 players15mdifficulty 1@ A1

★★★★☆

Spot it!, a.k.a. Dobble, is a simple pattern recognition game in which players try to find an image shown on two cards. Each card in original Spot it! features eight different symbols, with the symbols varying in size from one card to the next. Any two cards have exactly one symbol in common. For the basic Spot it! game, reveal one card, then another. Whoever spots the symbol in common on both cards claims the first card, then another card is revealed for players to search, and so on. Whoever has collected the most cards when the 55-card deck runs out wins! Rules for different games – each an observation game with a speed element – are included with Spot it!, with the first player to find a match either gaining or getting rid of a card. Multiple versions of Spot it! have been published, with images in each version ranging from Halloween to hockey to baseball to San Francisco. The game is sold as Spot it! in the USA and Dobble in Europe, with slight differences between the two editions. Note: some versions have fewer cards and fewer symbols per card. Cards Against Humanity (2009)

4-30 players30mdifficulty 1.2@ A2

★★★★☆

A party game for horrible people. In Cards Against Humanity, play begins with a judge, known as the "Card Czar", choosing a black question or fill-in-the-blank card from the top of the deck and showing it to all players. Each player holds a hand of ten white answer cards at the beginning of each round, and passes a card (sometimes two) to the Card Czar, face-down, representing their answer to the question on the card. The card czar determines which answer card(s) are funniest in the context of the question or fill-in-the-blank card. The player who submitted the chosen card(s) is given the question card to represent an "Awesome Point", and then the player to the left of the new Card Czar becomes the new Czar for the next round. Play continues until the players agree to stop, at which point the player with the most Awesome Points is the winner. This, so far, sounds like the popular and fairly inoffensive Apples to Apples. While the games are similar, the sense of humor required is very different. The game encourages players to poke fun at practically every awkward or taboo subject including race, religion, gender, poverty, torture, alcoholism, drugs, sex (oh yes), abortion, child abuse, celebrities, and those everyday little annoyances like "Expecting a burp and vomiting on the floor". In addition, there are a few extra rules. First, some question cards are "Pick 2" or cards, which require each participant to submit two cards in sequence to complete their answer. Second, a gambling component also exists. If a question is played which a player believes they have two possible winning answers for, they may bet an Awesome Point to play a single second answer. If the player who gambled wins, they retain the wagered point, but if they lose, the player who contributed the winning answer takes both points. Going Up? An Elevator Card Game

Going Up? An Elevator Card Game (2023)

2-6 players30m@ B1

★★★★☆

Going Up? An Elevator Card Game is a casual party game combining elements of games like "99" and "Uno" in which players takes turns playing a card from their hand to move the "Elevator" a set number of floors, based on the value of the card. If a player can't play a card without moving the elevator below the 1st floor or above the 99th, they're out. The last player standing wins! To make things more interesting, there are special cards scattered throughout the deck that can shake things up, buying you a breather or putting the pressure on your friends. Will you hoard these cards to protect yourself, or will you risk everything to catch your opponents off-guard? Play your cards right, and victory will be yours! Players take turns strategically playing cards from their hands in an attempt to keep the "Elevator" between floors 1 and 99. The Elevator starts on floor 1 going up. Each numbered card that's played adds its numbered value to the Elevator. However, players can also flip the Elevator's direction to going down, at which point numbered cards subtract their value from the Elevator.

Drunk Stoned or Stupid is a party game where in each round a card is drawn and the group decides who in the group should be tagged with the card. First a player declares themselves the judge and reads a card aloud. Each person then says who in the group should be tagged with this card and why. The judge considers all accusations and makes the final ruling on who should be tagged with the card. This person keeps the card along with the shame. The judge rotates to the next person in the group. First person with 7 cards loses. There are no winners in this game... only losers.

Million Dollars, But… The Game (MDB) puts your morals and imagination to the test, posing the question, "What would you do for a million dollars?" Players create scenarios by combining a trigger and a rule card to showcase what they would or wouldn't do for a big hunk of cash. (For example, a million dollars, but… every time you see a store having a sale, you poop your pants a little bit.) The best part of the game occurs when everyone debates the scenarios that have been presented to the judge: "Does it include online store sales or just in-person sales?", or "How much poop are we talking: a rabbit pellet or an uncomfortable amount?"

The Rainbow (2023)

The Rainbow is a colourful card game where players are trying to collect a winning hand, using wit and intelligence to try and outsmart their opponents. This requires the use of memory, strategy and powers of deduction along the way. The goal of each round is to collect the 7 colours of the rainbow. Players work hard to collect and protect their hand but other players can use a number of special cards to stop, steal or swap cards that can totally obliterate a hand and ruin any chances of winning. Players can work with or against each other to be the first to collect 1 card of each colour whilst avoiding being left with any cards that count against your overall score. After a player wins a round, other players add up the cards in their hand and when they reach 120 points overall that player is out of the game (alternative endings are also included). Players are dealt 7 cards each and then take it in turns to draw and discard cards taking any appropriate action, this is where the fun (or not so much fun) begins. —description from the designer

Taskmaster: The Board Game (2018)

Based on the UK television show on Dave. Taskmaster (the show) is hosted by comedians Alex Horne and Greg Davies, based on a performance by Alex Horne at the Edinburgh Fringe. Greg, the eponymous Taskmaster, is responsible for reading and scoring various tasks throughout the episode, which are given to five other comedians. In Taskmaster: The Boardgame, players alternate the role of Taskmaster, while the remaining players carry out a zany, time-limited task to compete for the approval of said Taskmaster, who is responsible for scoring everyone's attempt. The tasks are specified by cards associated with different rooms represented on a "plan view" of the Taskmaster house, which takes the form of the board: the lab, the living room, the kitchen, the garden. Players are then expected to complete the themed task using items from those rooms in their own venue. Players are also expected to complete an additional secret task during the play session, and a final task that is given via a video by Alex who takes on the taskmaster role for that final round. After the final task, the player with the highest score is declared the winner. —user summary

Battleship (1931)

2 players30mdifficulty 1.2@ A1

Battleship was originally a pencil-and-paper public domain game known by different names, but Milton Bradley made it into the well known board game in 1967. The pencil and paper grids were changed to plastic grids with holes that could hold plastic pegs used to record the guesses. Each player deploys his ships (of lengths varying from 2 to 5 squares) secretly on a square grid. Then each player shoots at the other's grid by calling a location. The defender responds by "Hit!" or "Miss!". You try to deduce where the enemy ships are and sink them. First to do so wins. The Salvo variant listed in the rules allows each player to call out from 1 to 5 shots at a time depending on the amount of ships the player has left (IE: players each start off with 5 ships, so they start off with 5 shots. As ships are sunk, the players gets fewer shots). This version of the game is closer to the original pencil-and-paper public domain game. Many versions of the pencil-and-paper game have different amounts of shots based on the ship (IE: Battleship: 5 shots. Destroyer: 3 Shots, Etc.).

Monopoly empire (2013)

2-4 players25mdifficulty 1.2@ A1

With Monopoly Empire, you can own some of the biggest brands in the world as every space on the game board is an iconic brand, including Xbox, Coca-Cola, McDonald's and Samsung. As in the original Monopoly game, players start with cash in hand, roll dice, and move a token around the game board while hoping to purchase properties. Each property is represented by one or more billboards, with the more valuable properties having larger billboards. When you purchase a property, you place a billboard into your personal plastic tower; when you pass "Go!" on the game board, you earn income based on the height of your tower. Reach a value of $800 on your tower, and you win. When you land on an opponent's property, you pay rent to that player based on the height of her tower. If you don't have enough cash on hand, hand over the top billboard in your tower instead but keep the cash you do have. This mechanism means there is no player elimination. While players don't trade properties, you can effectively steal them through the use of Empire cards and the "swap" face on one die, which allows you to swap the top billboards on two towers. To date, two editions have been released in the U.S.: The Second "Silver" Edition has some updated properties & movers from the First "Gold" Edition, but gameplay is the same for both editions. This game and Monopoly: Here & Now World Edition share many similarities.

For example, "My first encounter came after a series of lessons from *A_perforated_fire_hose* who had slain nine thousand bulls." Some cards have points on them, so the player who drew that cards would get some points. When all cards have been drawn, the points are tallied and a winner determined.

Lockdown!: The Game (2020)

2-6 playersdifficulty 2@ B2

Lockdown!: The Game is a comedy game created by James Veitch during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in which players try to trade cards to collect sets and loo rolls before COVID-19 ends the game. The trading mechanisms are supported by a bluffing mechanism in which players can lie about the cards they are trading. Each player starts with seven cards from the twelve types in the game. Each turn, a player draws two additional cards, then tries to negotiate trades, e.g., "I can trade Day drinking and Online, for company and distraction." After a successful deal, players trade the cards secretly. When trading, players can lie about the cards they are offering, except the first card that they offer. Players can additionally add Loo rolls as sweeteners for the trade. If a player collects three cards in the same category, they must play this set for points. The game ends when six COVID-19 cards are drawn, then all played sets are scored. Black cards in your sets (good events) are worth 2 points, loo rolls are 1 point, and red cards and unplayed cards are 0 points.

Players divide into teams and take turns drawing clues from prompt cards while their teammates race against the timer to guess the correct answer. Some rounds are designated "All Play," where multiple teams compete simultaneously to guess the same prompt, while other rounds feature solo team turns. Answers range in difficulty, and while artistic skill can help, imagination, communication, and quick thinking matter far more. A game board is used to track progress, adding a light strategic element to the competitive fun. First released in 1985, Pictionary became a massive hit and has remained a staple of the party game genre ever since.

Jenga (1983)

1-8 players20mdifficulty 1.1@ B2

Jenga is tower building game played with 54 wooden blocks; each block is 3 times as long as it is wide, and slightly smaller in height than in width. The blocks are stacked in a tower formation; each story is three blocks placed adjacent to each other along their long side, and each story is placed perpendicular to the previous (so, for example, if the blocks in the first story are pointing north-south, the second story blocks will point east-west). There are therefore 18 stories to the Jenga tower. Since stacking the blocks neatly can be tedious, a plastic loading tray is included. Once the tower is built, the person who built the tower moves first. Moving in Jenga consists of taking one and only one block from any story except the completed top story of the tower at the time of the turn, and placing it on the topmost story in order to complete it. Only one hand at a time may be used to remove a block; both hands can be used, but only one hand may be on the tower at a time. Blocks may be bumped to find a loose block that will not disturb the rest of the tower. Any block that is moved out of place may be left out of place if it is determined that it will knock the tower over if it is removed. The turn ends when the next person to move touches the tower, although he or she can wait 10 seconds before moving for the previous turn to end if they believe the tower will fall in that time. The game ends when the tower falls in any significant way -- in other words, any piece falls from the tower, other than the piece being knocked out to move to the top. The loser is the person who made the tower fall (i.e. whose turn it was when the tower fell); the winner is the person who moved before the loser. The same game concept was published in 1984 by Fagus under the name "Hoppla - eins zuviel!" According to the designer, the game was developed from Takoradi blocks/bricks. "Jenga" is Swahili for "build".

The Empire must fall. Our mission must succeed. By destroying their key bases, we will shatter Imperial strength and liberate our people. Yet spies have infiltrated our ranks, ready for sabotage. We must unmask them. In five nights we reshape destiny or die trying. We are the Resistance! The Resistance is a party game of social deduction. It is designed for five to ten players, lasts about 30 minutes, and has no player elimination. The Resistance is inspired by Mafia/Werewolf, yet it is unique in its core mechanics, which increase the resources for informed decisions, intensify player interaction, and eliminate player elimination. Players are either Resistance Operatives or Imperial Spies. For three to five rounds, they must depend on each other to carry out missions against the Empire. At the same time, they must try to deduce the other players' identities and gain their trust. Each round begins with discussion. When ready, the Leader entrusts sets of Plans to a certain number of players (possibly including himself/herself). Everyone votes on whether or not to approve the assignment. Once an assignment passes, the chosen players secretly decide to Support or Sabotage the mission. Based on the results, the mission succeeds (Resistance win) or fails (Empire win). When a team wins three missions, they have won the game. Rule Correction: For first printing (2010 purchases), the expansion rules should read: "Games of 5-6 players use 7 plot cards, games with 7+ players use all 15 Plot Cards." and "...each Round, the leader draws Plot cards (1 for 5-6 players, 2 for 7-8 players, and 3 for 9-10 players)" - This has been corrected in the subsequent printings.

Arboretum (2015)

2-4 players30mdifficulty 2.1@ B3

Arboretum is a strategy card game for 2-4 players, aged 10 and up, that combines set collection, tile-laying and hand management while playing in about 25 minutes. Players try to have the most points at the end of the game by creating beautiful garden paths for their visitors. The deck has 80 cards in ten different colors, with each color featuring a different species of tree; each color has cards numbered 1 through 8, and the number of colors used depends on the number of players. Players start with a hand of seven cards. On each turn, a player draws two cards (from the deck or one or more of the discard piles), lays a card on the table as part of her arboretum, then discards a card to her personal discard pile. When the deck is exhausted, players compare the cards that remain in their hands to determine who can score each color. For each color, the player(s) with the highest value of cards in hand of that color scores for a path of trees in her arboretum that begins and ends with that color; a path is a orthogonally adjacent chain of cards with increasing values. For each card in a path that scores, the player earns one point; if the path consists solely of trees of the color being scored, the player scores two points per card. If a player doesn't have the most value for a color, she scores zero points for a path that begins and ends with that color. Whoever has the most points wins.

Muffin Time (2021)

2-8 players40mdifficulty 1@ B3

Muffin Time is a chaotic card game with more twists and turns than you can shake a spork at! Battle your friends, family, and hyper-intelligent pets by drawing and playing from a deck of unique cards that'll either help you, thwart others, or mix things up for the sheer hell of it! To win the game, you just need to start your turn with exactly 10 cards in your hand but if you think that'll be easy, you're wrong (wronger than a duck wearing shoes- and that's pretty damn wrong). Players draw a card on their turn and can choose to "place" up to three trap cards out of their hand. As a second part of their turn they either pick up one card or play one action card, which are all unique and can have wide-ranging consequences on the other players or game as a whole The game ends when a player wins when someone starts their turn holding exactly 10 cards. So, if you're looking for a hilarious and unpredictable game, I hear Cards Against Humanity is pretty fun! But since you probably own that already, maybe give Muffin Time a chance. —description from the designer Artwork is from the "asdfmovie" YouTube series by Thomas Ridgewell.

You've Got Crabs (2018)

4-10 players20mdifficulty 1.2@ B3

Form teams of two players each (max of 5 teams). Each team meets privately to come up with a non vocal signal to indicate when either teammate collects 4 of the same Crab Card. Each player will get a hand of 4 cards. One side plays at a time. On a side's turn, all players on that side can simultaneously swap any card from their hand with a card from the middle of the table (The Ocean). When you have 4 of the same Crab Card, you can't say anything out loud. Instead, when you're ready, give your secret signal to your teammate. When they notice, they will point at you and shout, 'YOU'VE GOT CRABS!' If they're right, your team gets a point. If they're wrong, your team loses a point. However if a player on another team suspects you're passing a signal, they can point and shout, 'YOU'VE GOT CRABS!' If they are correct, they steal one of your points. If they are incorrect, steal a Crab Token from the accusing player. The game is over when the last Crab Token has been taken from the Crab Pot. At that point, all teams should count up their combined Crab Tokens. The team with the most Crab Tokens wins. The game is a reimplementation of the classic card game Kemps, but with a different card distribution and breaking up the card swap phase by team.

This is a quick-thinking category game. The aim of the game is to build your giant slice of pizza by winning small triangles of pizza. To win a triangle you must be the first player to shout out a word that links the category and the letter on the cards. So if the letter is B and the category is TV Shows, you could shout "Baywatch!". If you're first to shout a correct answer, you win the card. Now flip a new card and go again. Each round there are three letters and three categories on the table, so you can link any letter to any category. You just need to be super quick! —description from the publisher

Truth Bombs (2017)

4-8 players20mdifficulty 1@ C1

In the party game Dan and Phil's Truth Bombs, you're going to write something about everyone else at the table, and they're going to write stuff about you. Can you guess who said what? To play, lay out question cards on the table on colored mats, then give each player a target sheet and have them write their name in the target box. Everyone passes their target sheet to the left, then everyone takes the target sheet they received, chooses one of the questions (e.g., "What are they terrible at?"), then writes down an answer. When everyone is finished, pass the sheets left again, then choose a question that hasn't already been answered for the sheet you were just handed, and write down an answer to a new question. Continue doing this until you fill in one answer on each person's sheet. Players then take turns reading aloud the answers to the questions for the target player whose sheet they hold. The target player then selects their favorite answer and guesses who wrote it. The player who wrote the favorite answer scores a point. If the target player was correct in their guess, they also receive a point. Play a predetermined number of rounds, then throw all the scores away because you're mad at all the other players.

Forbidden Island (2010)

2-4 players30mdifficulty 1.7@ C1

Forbidden Island is a visually stunning cooperative board game. Instead of winning by competing with other players like most games, everyone must work together to win the game. Players take turns moving their pawns around the 'island', which is built by arranging the many beautifully screen-printed tiles before play begins. As the game progresses, more and more island tiles sink, becoming unavailable, and the pace increases. Players use strategies to keep the island from sinking, while trying to collect treasures and items. As the water level rises, it gets more difficult- sacrifices must be made. What causes this game to truly stand out among co-op and competitive games alike is the extreme detail that has been paid to the physical components of the game. It comes in a sturdy and organized tin of good shelf storage size. The plastic treasure pieces and wooden pawns are well crafted and they fit just right into the box. The cards are durable, well printed, and easy to understand. The island tiles are the real gem: they are screen-printed with vibrant colors, each with a unique and pleasing image. With multiple levels of difficulty, different characters to choose from (each with a special ability of their own), many optional island formats and game variations available, Forbidden Island has huge replay value. The game can be played by as few as two players and up to four (though it can accommodate five). More players translates into a faster and more difficult game, though the extra help can make all the difference. This is a fun game, tricky for players of almost any age. Selling for under twenty dollars, oddly, Forbidden Island is a rare game of both quality and affordable price. For those who enjoy Forbidden Island, a follow-up project by Gamewright titled Forbidden Desert was released in 2013. From the publisher's website: Dare to discover Forbidden Island! Join a team of fearless adventurers on a do-or-die mission to capture four sacred treasures from the ruins of this perilous paradise. Your team will have to work together and make some pulse-pounding maneuvers, as the island will sink beneath every step! Race to collect the treasures and make a triumphant escape before you are swallowed into the watery abyss!
